Abstract

Textile fabrics are improved by treatment with resin alcohols, amines corresponding to the alcohol or derivatives thereof such as ethers, polyglycol ethers or esters in the form of aqueous or organic solutions or in emulsions. Suitable resin alcohols or derivatives include abietinol, dihydroabietinol, abietinylamine, dihydroabietinylamine; salts of the amines such as the hydrochlorides, formates, acetates, butyrates, palmitates, stearates, oleates, resinates, sulphonates; quaternary ammonium compounds of the amines such as abietinyl-trimethyl-, -triethyl, or dimethylcetylammonium in the form of their hydroxides or methyl sulphuric acid salts; condensation products of the amines and reactive compounds of low molecular weight such as chloracetic acid, polyhydric alcohols, alkylene oxides, polyglycerine chloride; abietinyl isocyanate, abietinyl isothiocyanate, abietinyl carbamic acid chloride; reaction products of resin alcohols or chlorcarbonic acid esters of dihydroabietinol with aminoalcohols, amino carboxylic acids, albumen degradation products, hydroxycarboxylic acids, hydroxy or aminosulphonic acids and polyglycerine; esters of resin alcohols with sulphuric, phosphoric, acetic, stearic, oleic, montanic, abietic, oxalic, malonic, succinic, maleic, adipic, tartronic, malic, tartaric saccharic, tricarballylic, citric, aspartic, phthalic terephthalic and mellitic acids either the neutral or acid esters or salts thereof with alkalies, ammonia, amines, monethylamine, diethylamine, triethanolamine being suitable; ethers of resin alcohols such as those from ethyl, propyl, butyl, octyl, oleyl and vinyl alcohols or ethylene glycol; reaction products of the resin alcohols with alkylene oxides, halogen carboxylic acids, halogen alkylsulphonic acid such as chloracetic, or chlorethane sulphonic acid. Water-insoluble products may be dispersed by means of alkylated aromatic sulphonic acids, sulphonic acids of high molecular weight, aliphatic compounds such as fatty acids or alcohols, condensation products of fatty acids and hydroxy or aminoalkyl sulphonic acids, amino carboxylic acid or aminoalcohols and their salts, polyglycol ethers soaps, salts of amines or ammonium bases. The treating baths may also contain other substances suitable for the treatment of textiles such as wetting agents, dressing agents, artificial resins, colloids, such as glue or gelatine, drying oils, softening agents, inorganic materials such as Glauber's salt, sodium carbonate, phosphoric acid salts, alkaline earth metal salts. Where the amine is used the products may be treated with formaldehyde. In examples: (1) an artificial silk fabric having readily displaceable weft and warp threads, or the single threads thereof, is treated with a solution of abietinylamine acetate with or without the addition of formaldehyde; (2) a mixed fabric of artificial silk and cotton is treated in a bath containing a reaction product of chloracetic acid and abietinylamine, the corresponding sodium salt, or trimethylabietinyl ammonium methyl sulphate; (3) an artificial silk fabric is treated in a bath containing a reaction product of ethylene oxide and abietinylamine; (4) an artificial silk fabric is treated in a bath containing monodihydroabietinyl maleate or a condensation product of the chlorocarbonic acid ester of abietinol and sarcosine and a condensation product derived from ethylene oxide and oleyl alcohol or abietinol or in a bath containing an acid sulphuric ester of abietinol or the sodium salt thereof; (5) an artificial silk fabric is treated in a bath containing diabietinyl maleate or polymerized dihydroabietinyl vinyl ether, and a condensation product of ethylene oxide and oleyl alcohol; p (6) a viscose artificial silk fabric is treated in a solution of dihydroabietinyl isocyanate in carbon tetrachloride or in an aqueous bath containing an ethylene oxideabietinol condensation product and turkey red oil. The Provisional Specification also refers to the addition of materials to the spinning baths in the preparation of artificial silk.
