[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 13, 1936.] [Class 29] Compression machines.-A plant for generating heat by passing a fluid through a thermodynamic cycle uses butane or other heavy hydrocarbon, or similar medium with an overhanging temperature entropy curve and the pressure throughout the apparatus is maintained above atmospheric pressure. A compressor 1<1> draws fluid from an evaporator 3<1> and drives it into a condenser 2<1>. The liquid from the condenser 21 is expanded in a turbine 6<1> on its way to the evaporator 3<1>. This turbine assists in driving the compressor 11. The flow of water which warms the evaporator is regulated by a thermostat in the water outlet from the evaporator while the adjustable nozzle 5<1> of the turbine is controlled by a thermostat in the vapour admission connection to the condenser. A heat accumulator may be included in the liquid circulation system warmed by the condenser. Substances used in the cycle may comprise butane, butylene, propane, pentane, tetramethylmethane, propane fluoride, or butane fluoride or mixtures thereof.
