[Class 29.] Compression machines and systems.-A fluid is cooled or heated in batches as opposed to a continuous flow by a medium passing through a compression, condensation, and evaporation thermodynamic cycle. In heating a liquid, the cycle is formed by a condenser 7 in the liquid heating tank 8, an evaporator 1 warmed by circulating water in a tank 2, and a compressor 4 driven by a motor 5. The filling and emptying of tank 8 is effected by the operation of valves 15 and 16 by solenoids 19 and 20. These solenoids and the motor 5 are caused to operate by a float 25 and thermostat 26 so that the tank is first filled with liquid, then the motor 5 is started so that the liquid is heated, then the motor is stopped, and the batch of liquid emptied into the tank 11. A float operated switch, not shown, stops the motor 5 when tank 11 is full. The apparatus is adapted for cooling by transferring the condenser 7 to tank 2 and the evaporator 1 to tank 8.
