Abstract

Direct air-pressure apparatus, automatic. - Apparatus for forcing fluids by means of a gaseous working medium which is alternatively heated and cooled, comprises a forcing chamber A<a> with inlet and outlet valves 3. 4 for the fluid and a regenerator r combined with heating means a and cooling means b. The fluid is heated at the upper pressure limit and the heat may be supplied by fuel injected into the working space. The working medium, such as air, is forced through the regenerator by pistons 16, 21 during their downstrokes, and the air in passing through the heater a expands and forces the liquid &c. through the outlet valve 4. During the upstrokes of the pistons, the air passes upwards through the regenerator and is cooled by the cooler b, so that the pressure in the chamber Aa falls and more liquid &c. enters through the valve 3. The pistons are driven by a motor m which may be actuated by part of the pressure fluid expelled from the chamber A<a>. In the form shown in Fig. 2, only one piston is used, and it is connected to a disc 29 loosely fitting the chamber to prevent the heated air from mixing with the air &c. to be forced. The lower part of the forcing chamber is connected by a pipe 32, regenerator R<c> and the chamber A<c> to the upper part of the chamber 33 to assist the downstroke of the piston 16. In other forms, the piston is replaced by a volume of air which is forced by a small piston to and fro through a regenerator in a chamber opening into the main forcing chamber; or the forcing medium is moved by a rotary displacer instead of by a piston; two differential pistons are axially connected on opposite sides of the regenerator: and the piston 16 is made differential by providing it with a thick piston rod.
