Abstract
464,649. Slicing machines. FITZPATRICK, H. J. (Maatschappij van Berkel's Patent N.V.) Nov. 12, 1935, No. 31237. [Class 28 (ii)] In a slicing-machine, the slice-discharge fly 1 is connected to a fluid shock-absorber 3 in such manner that the resistance to the movement of the fly progressively increases during the discharge swing thereof. As shown, an arm 4 of the fly has a cam face 5 which bears against a roller 9 on an arm 6 turnable with a toothed quadrant 7 on the axis 8. A rack 10 meshes with the quadrant 7 and is connected by a rod 11 to the plunger 12 of the dashpot which comprises outer and inner cylinders 3, 16 mutually adjustable axially, by the screwthread connection 18, to vary the outlet passage between the bottom of the cylinder 16 and the frusto-conical part 20 of the cap 19. Ports 22, 23 are provided in the walls of the cylinder 16. The rod 11 passes loosely through the neck 24 necessitating a roller 25, carried by a pair of links 26, to bear on the back of the rack 10 to keep it in mesh with the quadrant 7. A return spring 13 is attached to the upper end of the rack. The dashpot need not be arranged vertically and the cam face 5 may be straight, or the spring 13 may be dispensed with by providing a cam groove for the roller 9. The plunger 12 may have a non-return valve, e.g. a ball valve, to permit free passage of fluid during the return movement of the plunger. Oil is preferably used as the dashpot medium, but when a pneumatic dashpot is used, means are provided to prevent sharp rebound due to rapid compression of the air. The member 6 need not act through toothed parts but may have an arm which is connected by a link to the dashpot. In an alternative construction, the connection between the fly and the dashpot includes an arm which turns with the fly and is linked to a guide, such as a roller constrained to ride against a stationary track, said guide being connected to the dashpot and said arm being so arranged as to be in parallelism, or nearly so, with the axis of the dashpot when the fly is in its pre-discharge position.
