[Class 58] Apparatus for mechanically mixing dough or other plastic materials and for automatically extracting the plastic material for samples comprises a container for the material and a rotary kneading arm 2 therein, the container having an aperture in the wall through which material to be tested may be expelled under the pressure of the kneading arm, and a cutting blade 21 mounted adjacent to the orifice and extending into the container to a position close to the path of the kneading arm to direct the material through the aperture. The base 1 of the container is provided with devices for electrical heating and cooling by water circulation, preferably thermostatically controlled. The kneading arm 2 is first rotated in the direction shown by the arrow to knead the material pressure thus being exerted upon the face A of the container which is provided with a movable element 5 oscillating about a shaft 6 having a counterweight 7 and carrying a arm 9 actuating a plunger 11 in a dashpot 12. During the preliminary stages of mixing, the element 5 is covered by a shield. After removal of this shield, the deviation of a pointer 10 attached to the element 5 measures the consistency of the paste ; a diaphragm or a piston moving in a cylinder may replace the member 5. To extract the kneaded material for samples, a plate 18 normally covering the extraction aperture is removed and the direction of rotation of the arm 2 reversed. The blade 21 is placed in position and a strip of oiled paper 25 is placed on a shelf 23 on to which the paste is forced between the directing knife 21 and a roller 19 by the arm 2. In a-modification, the paste is forced into interchangeable moulds secured close to the aperture.
