Abstract
627,655. Pressing glass. HOLOPHANE, Ltd. (Holophane Co., Inc.). June 10, 1947, No. 15266. [Class 56] Shallow non-circular glass articles, e.g. of polygonal dished or flat form, are pressed out in a mould whose periphery impedes but does not arrest the outward flow of the glass; the glass is thus constrained to fill the entire mould and may be reduced to a predetermined thickness therein regardless of the original amount supplied. The mould 20 shown in Fig. 4 and the lower part of Fig. 6 for making square plates has lands 25 which with corresponding parts 29 on the stainless steel plunger 21 form peripheral constrictions between the fluted &c. interior surfaces 22, 23 and the cut away outer portions 24. In operation the glass 30 spreads in all directions until it meets the nearest parts of the lands and then continues as at 31, 32 until the corners are filled; excess glass is squeezed out through the constrictions until the plunger 21 meets a stop defining the required thickness; after annealing, the excess glass is removed from the plate by scoring along the thin parts corresponding to the constrictions and the edges are ground to size.
