Abstract
462,378. Reflectors. HUNTER, F. May 30, 1935, No. 15752. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Groups XVIII, X, and XI] A display device for use as a sign, advertisement, bicycle reflector, or the like, comprises a light-transmitting support, such as a glass plate or globe, provided on its rear or inner surface with a layer of light-transmitting beads which are secured by being partially embedded in a light-transmitting adhesive layer applied to said surface, and a dispersively-reflecting opaque or translucent background secured in contact with the exposed parts of the beads. The background is preferably of yielding material, e.g. paper, so as to be deformed to the contour of the beads when pressed against them, to provide a large area of contact. Alternatively, it may consist of a layer of translucent or opaque adhesive, such as paint or varnish, applied to the exposed parts of the beads. The device may be mounted in a frame, the back of which is provided with resilient means, such as a sheet of sponge rubber or flat springs, to press the background against the beads. In one method of mounting the beads, a thin layer of adhesive is applied to the rear face of the support and solidified, and the beads then embedded in a further coating of adhesive applied to this solidified layer.
