[Class 80 (ii)] Levers 1, 2 are pivoted at 3<a> to the driven or driving member 3 and have convex edges a adapted to roll on a lever 6 carried by the driving or driven member 8, the ends of the levers 1, 2 bearing on springs 4, so that, owing to the variation in the leverage of the levers 1 about their moving fulcra, the resistance of the coupling increases at an increasing rate as the angular displacement between the driving and driven members increases. During drive, each spring 4 may be compressed between a block 12 on the lever 1 and the head 10 of a rod 11 projecting from the lever 6. As shown, levers 1<a>, 2<a> are provided, so that the coupling acts for both directions of rotation. In a single-acting modification, the levers 1, 2 are pivoted to arms extending from the shaft 8 and roll on levers projecting inwardly from the member 3. The coupling may be arranged to drive the drum of a crane or winch, the drum carrying the member 3 and the shaft 8 being the shaft of the driving motor. Alternatively, the coupling may be arranged between a driven gear-wheel and the drum. The coupling may also be arranged between the flywheel and the clutch of a motor vehicle, or in the rudder-head of a ship.
