Abstract
Phthalic anhydride is produced by the catalytic oxidation of naphthalene by air diluted with an inert gas, the amount of air supplied being not substantially greater than the theoretical requirement. The diluent may initially be carbon dioxide and later the inert gases obtained from the reaction products. The reaction is preferably carried out in an apparatus of the type described in Specification 461,888, [Group III], with a vanadium oxide catalyst. Proportions specified are 70 cub. ft. of air made up to about two or three times its volume with carbon dioxide per pound of naphthalene.
