Abstract
312,388. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 24, 1928. Oxygenated organic compounds.-Oxygenated organic compounds are obtained by passing a gaseous oxidant at a raised temperature through liquid benzine hydrocarbons boiling below 180‹ C., a distillation during the process being avoided. The process is preferably conducted at 80-200‹ C. and may be carried out under pressure and (or) with the use of catalysts such as the resinates, oleates, enolates or other organic compounds of the alkali or alkaline-earth metals, magnesium, aluminium, or manganese. Solid .bodies of large superficial area, such as masses of aluminium or its alloys, may also be present, being preferably arranged so that they protrude above the liquid surface. The oxidant may be air, oxygen, or nitrogen oxides, and the risk of explosion may be avoided by diluting the oxidant or by adjusting the conditions so that the gases leaving the liquid are sufficiently deoxidized. According to the examples, (1) hexane mixed with a little manganese acetylacetonate is treated with air at 145‹ C. under 20 atm, pressure in an aluminium-lined tube charged with fillers and cooled at the upper part, and (2) a benzine boiling at about 70‹ C. is oxidized in the same apparatus and under similar conditions with air diluted with carbon dioxide, no catalyst being employed: the products in each case comprise fatty acids and their esters. Specification 303,268 is referred to.
