Abstract

Drying oils, semi-drying oils, the corresponding fatty acids, and derivatives thereof such as the esters of the fatty acids with mono- or polyhydric alcohols, are catalytically polymerized by passing said materials in a continuous manner through an apparatus comprising a polymerizing zone containing the catalyst and maintained at the polymerizing temperature. Linseed oil, whale oil, pilchard oil, sardine oil, and linseed oil fatty acid are specified as starting materials, and metallic nickel, platinum, palladium, cobalt, copper and iron, aluminium chloride, stannic tetrachloride, antimony chloride, oxides, inorganic and organic acids, acid salts, and per-compounds are specified as catalysts. The catalyst may be in finely divided or in aggregated form, and may be supported upon a coarsely granular carrier. The starting material may be treated prior to, or during polymerization, as by oxidation, partial hydrogenation, chlorination or sulphuration, and may be mixed with other materials used in the manufacture of lacquers, varnishes and synthetic resins. Heat may be recovered from the treated material and used for pre-heating the starting material, and the reaction may be effected in vacuo, at ordinary or increased pressure, or in such gases as carbon-dioxide or nitrogen. According to examples, a continuous stream of linseed oil, of heated oxidized sardine oil, or of heated linseed oil fatty acid, is passed through a heated tube filled with activated nickel. The polymerizing process may be followed by distillation in vacuo, steam distillation, molecular distillation, or by a combination of such treatments.
