Abstract

461,047. Linkwork conveying rotary motion. LAER, R. VAN. Feb. 14, 1936, No. 4547. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1935. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group IX] In a scutching mill for flax &c. comprising beater arms b disposed radially on a shaft a, Fig. 1, and wherein the arms are driven with an angular velocity which varies between a maximum and minimum throughout the circular trajectory of the free ends of the arms, eccentrics d are mounted on the shaft a which co-operate with crowns e provided with rods m passing through guide openings or slots n in the arms b and sliding therein. One crown e is formed with teeth h and is driven thereby through an endless chain i actuated by an electric motor j. The system is set angularly by a worm g on a shaft k, and operated by a hand wheel l, which engages a worm-wheel f co-operating with one of the eccentrics. In a scutching mill comprising drums 1, 2, Figs. 3 and 5, the arms 5 are freely mounted by sleeves 6 on shafts 3, 4 and are slotted at 8 to receive rollers 9 on rods or cross-bars 10 fixed in recesses in the crowns 12 which revolve on eccentrics 16. One crown in each drum is driven through gearing 20 and thence by a chain 14 engaging teeth 13 thereon. The flax is gripped in a conveyer 36 and waste is removed by air suction through an aperture 29 in the casing 28. The eccentrics are set angularly by means of right and left-handed worm-screws 40 on a shaft 37 engaging worm wheels 17. The setting is indicated on the band 33. The spacing of the beaters 7 at the point of contact varies according to the position occupied by the centre 41 of the driving cylinder 101 formed by the bars 10. Figs. 1a and 3 show respectively the dispositions for minimum and maximum spacing. In a modification, the driving cylinders 10<1> are displaceable on curves 43, Fig. 11, which pass through the centres of the shafts 3, 4 and have as centres the shafts 47 of the transmission gear. In the middle position the centres of the driving cylinders 10<1> coincide with the axes of the shafts 3, 4 this giving a uniform spacing of the beaters 7. The frames 45 carrying the driving cylinders 10<1> are adjusted about the shafts 47 by nuts 52 on a screw-threaded shaft 53. In a further modification the rods 10 are sufficiently resilient to twist slightly when the beaters 7 are in engagement with the material, the beaters also occupying a corresponding helical position.
