Breaking and scutching apparatus. - Flax, hemp, &c. is passed by breaking-devices to an intermittently revolving cage or drum provided with holding-devices so operated that by relative movements between them and the strick each end of the strick is presented in turn to scutching-devices, and the strick is then discharged. A belt A, Fig. 1, passes the stricks of flax through breaking rollers B to the cage or drum C, carrying a series of pairs of holding-rollers D<1> - - D<4> The strick is fed by the rollers D<1>, down through the rollers D<2>, and a pair of fixed gripping rollers E to the scutching-devices F. When that end of the strick has been treated the cage is rotated in a clockwise direction for three-quarters of a revolution. The rollers D<1>, D<2> now rotate to feed the end held by the rollers D<1> down to the scutching devices. The cage then rotates through another three-quarters of a revolution, and the rollers then rotate to deliver the fully treated strick on to its belt G. A second pair of scutching- devices may be provided and the unscutched ends of a strick be fed by a belt to a second cage or drum co-operating with the second pair of scutching devices. In a suitable arrangement for driving the various devices, the scutching- devices are operated from the main shaft H, Fig. 7, by a chain h<3>; the rollers D<1> - - D' by gears N, m<3> from a sleeve M, the direction of rotation of which can be reversed by gears k<1>, k<2> and a clutch m<2> operated by a cam r<a> and lever S; and the cage or drum C, which is loose on the shaft m<1>, by the gears k<1>, P, shaft T and gears t', t<2>, t<3>, W, the last of which is mutilated to give the correct amount of rotation.
