Abstract

330,660. Callender's Cable &. Construction Co., Ltd., and Allcock H. J. March 19, 1929. Cables, machines, apparatus, and processes for making.-In a machine for twisting together a pair of wires in sudden separate steps, Fig. 5, as distinguished from a, uniform spiral twist, the untwisted wires are passed from a bobbin frame through a guide member adapted to perform a rotary step-by-step movement which is affected by a mutilated gear wheel. In the embodiment shown, the machine is arranged to operate on two pairs of wires simultaneously. Discs 1, 39, Fig. 7, attached to a shaft 2, carry bobbin frames 37 which are connected to pinion wheels 4, Fig. 1. by hollow shafts 3 passing through the disc 1. The motion of the pinions 4 is transmitted through gearing 5, 8 to mutilated gear wheels 10 which rotate the tubular wire-guides 19 in a series of steps by means of gear wheels 13, 15, 16. In order that the guide members 19 shall always turn through the same angle, the mutilated gear wheels are formed with ribs 29 between the sets of teeth, adapted to engage grooves in certain teeth of the wheels 13 and to lock the latter in position after they have turned through their proper angle. The locking action may be further assisted by blade springe having tongues which engage recesses in sleeves 36 of the wheels 13. When the machine is in operation, the wires pass from bobbins 38 through the hollow shafts 3 and guide members 19 to pulleys 20 situated near the ends of the guide members-. Each pair of wires takes a number of turns around its pulley and then passes to a take-up drum. A train of wheels, not shown, but carried on the disc 39 causes the bobbin frames 37 to revolve about their axes when the shaft 2 is rotated, and a uniform twist is thus given to the wires between the bobbins and the toothed wheels 16. The uniform twist is taken out periodically by the sudden rotation of the guide members, which are adapted to revolve at the same average speeds and in the same direction as their respective bobbin frames, and a sharp local twist is imparted to the short length of the wires between the guide members and the pulleys 20. In a modified construction flat plates are substituted for the pulleys 20. The machine when used in conjunction with a quadding die can be arranged to form a quad of telephone wires; by rotating the two bobbin frames at different speeds, each of which is different from that of the shaft 2, the two pairs of wires are given different lays, each of which differs from the lay of the quad.
