Abstract

245,631. Heaton, A. Feb. 26, 1925. Willows, treating.-The first operation consists in holding the willow thick end first on a travelling belt B, Fig. 3, which leads them under iron plates A. This effects a loosening of the bark at the thick ends. Still thick end first, they are fed between feed rollers L which lead them to one or other pair of the stripping-rolls F<1>, F<2>, F<3>. These rolls are loose on their spindle S but can rotate in the direction of feed only, under the action of springs E<2>, Figs. 2, 4, which limit the amount of rotation. From the stripping-rolls the willows pass between rollers H, I, J which assist in drawing them through the stripping- rolls. Rolls L, H, I, J are fixed to their spindles and are driven from a suitable engine by belts passing over pulleys X to X<3> the arrangement being such that the rolls H, I, J rotate at progressively increasing speeds. After the passage of a willow through a pair of the stripping.rolls the spring causes a partial backward rotation thereof, throwing off the peeled bark. The rolls may be further backwardly revolved by pulling on an endless rope K wrapped around a projecting sleeve V and passing over pulleys M. Each spring E<2> is attached to an arm of a ratchet E which engages the roll by means of a pawl R. The rolls are preferably covered with indiarubber, which may be ribbed or roughened, and the pairs of rolls are kept pressed together by springs controlled by hand-screws D.
