THOMAS GEORGE MYLoHnEEs'r AND WILLIAM BnowN, 0F LEEns, ENGLAND.
MACHINE FOR THE PREPARATION 0E FLAX, JUTE, HEMP, AND SIMILAR FIBERS FOB.
' SPINNING.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we THOMAS GEORGE MYLCHREEST and WILLIAM BROWN, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, and residents of Wellington Foundry, Wellington street, Leeds, Yorkshire, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for the Preparation of Flax, Jute, Hemp, and Similar Fibers for Spinning, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to machines for preparing fibers such as flax, jute, hemp and the like for spinning.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of machines of this type so as to insure a better preparation and softening of the fibers being treated.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings of which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the left hand side of the cylinderpart of the machine, and Fig. l is a sectional side elevation of the right hand side of the cylinder part of the machine.
Referring to the drawing, a is a cylinder, the shaft of which is mounted in bearings in a suitable frame I) and is driven by a train of gearing o from any convenient source of power, such for instance as may be derived from the finishing card which receives the fibers when they leave the machine now being described. The cylinder at is furnished circumferentially with radial pins 03, some only of which have been shown, but which are continued around the entire circumference.
Between the rows of pins d are rods e which extend lengthwise of the cylinder and have their ends, which protrude through slots 9 in the end plates of the said cylinder, engaging in cam like grooves f in the framing opposite the ends of the cylinder.
The rods 6 are carried around as the cylinder rotates in the direction of the arrow, and are moved, as they go, by the grooves f in and out, toward and away, from the center of the cylinder. The stationary fram ing carries bearings for creels it three of which are-shown. These creels, which have bars 71 engaging with the pins (Z of the cylinder and are rotated thereby, are placed opposite the indented portions of the grooves f so that when fiber is carried around by the pins it is alternately pressed in by bars 11 of the creels h and pushed out again by the rods 6 and in this manner the fibers are Specification of Letters Patent.

lifted clear of the pins and pressed down again in a different position thereby thoroughly; separating and softening the same. The bearings of the creels h are mounted to slide and to yield against springs j which are adjustable by means of nuts to give any pressure desired. 70 k are two pairs of fluted rollers for receiving the fibers from the feed table and transferring them to the cylinder at to be separated and softened before delivery to the next machine or finishing card. The delivery from the cylinder a is effected by a series of fluted rollers Z driven by suitable bevel gearing as indicated in the drawing.
To enable the machine above described to work satisfactorily, the fibers must be fed to it in such quantity and with such speed as will accord with the capacity and with the speed of running of the said machine.
a is a belt running from a pulley 1 on the shaft 2 which is driven in any convenient manner from the main drive of the machine. This belt is for driving the feeding mechanism for the cylinder.
3 is a pointer moving over a dial 4 and driven from the feed rollers k of the cylinder by any suitable mechanism. This pointer indicates the rate of running of the feed rollers 0 7c.
5 is an idle pulley which takes up the slack of the belt a and keeps it sufiiciently taut under all conditions.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed we declare that what we claim is l. A machine for preparing fibers for spinning comprisin a rotary cylinder having a plurality of Xed combing pins on its periphery, a plurality of creels operating at certain points along the periphery of the cylinder during its rotation to press the fibers down into contact with the pins and means operating at other points along the periphery of the cylinder during its rotation to lift the fibers ofi the pins.
2. A machine for preparing i fibers for spinning comprising a rotary cylinder having a plurality of fixed combing pins on its periphery, a plurality of creels operating at certain points along the periphery of the cylinder during its rotation to press the fibers down into contact with the pins, and a plurality of rods traveling with the cylinder in an undulating path and operating at other points along the periphery of the cylinder during its rotation to lift the fibers off the pins.
3. A machine for preparing fibers for spinning comprising a rotary cylinder having a plurality of fixed combing pins on its periphery, a plurality of creels operating at certain points along the periphery of the cylinder during its rotation to press the fibers down into contact with the pins and means'for raising the fibers ofi the pins, Which said means comprises a series of rods extending the length of the cylinder and 10- cated in slots between the said pins and a pair of oppositely arranged stationary camlike grooves in Which the rods travel with therotating cylinder. 7 V
