[Class 110 (iii)] [See also Group XII] Combustion is con-6 trolled in a firebox supplied with air under pressure by a blower driven by a turbine actuated by combustion products from the firebox by means of a damper arranged in a pipe connecting the delivery of the blower with the intake of the turbine. As shown in Fig. 1, liquid fuel is supplied to the firebox of a boiler by a burner 6 and air for combustion is supplied through a pipe 5 from a blower 1 driven by a gas turbine 2 actuated by combustion products leaving the boiler flue 9. The blower is also driven by a steam turbine or other auxiliary motor 3. A pipe 11 connects the delivery 5 of the blower with the flue 9 and is controlled by a damper 12 actuated by hand or automatically by a device ensuring a constant ratio between the fuel and air supplies. For this purpose diaphragms 14, 17 actuated in accordance with the supplies of fuel and air are connected by levers to the damper 12. If the blower rotates above a predetermined speed a governor 24 actuates a damper 28 in a pipe 29 to permit air from the blower to pass to the atmosphere or to the exhaust flue 10 of the turbine. In passing to the exhaust flue the air from the pipe 29 may be led, as shown in Fig. 2, through pipes 30, 31 and chambers 32, 33 to spaces 35, 36 between the rotor 34 and stator of the turbine for cooling purposes.
