Abstract
459,679. Combined liquid and gas pumps. COWEY, L. E., Archer Works, Kew Gardens, Surrey. Oct. 5, 1935, No. 27560. [Class 102 (i)] [See also Groups VI and XVII] In a combined aerating and bottling machine of the kind in which liquid to be aerated is supplied by a pump 13 to an aerator which supplies the aerated liquid under pressure to the bottling mechanism, the excess gas and liquid vented through the snifting valves of the bottling mechanism are returned by the pump to the aerator. The pump 13 is connected at its lower end to a pipe for supply of liquid and a pipe discharging to the aerator. At its upper end it is provided with an inlet 13b provided with an adjustable non-return valve 16 and connected to a counter-pressure chamber, into which snifted gas and liquid are discharged, and with an outlet 14<a> provided with a non-return valve 17 and connected to the aerator. Each down stroke of the pump piston 10 discharges fresh liquid below the piston 10 and draws in snifted gas and liquid by the inlet 13<b>. The up stroke discharges gas and liquid by the outlet 14<a> to the aerator, and draws in fresh liquid below the piston 10. The inner end of the piston rod is formed with a passage 8<a>, 8<c> provided with a valve 8<d>, so that any gas leaking past the piston is returned to the space above the piston during its down stroke.
