Abstract

323,534. Walsh, V. G., and Collins, V. A. Oct. 4, 1928. Emulsions, making. -An apparatus for making emulsions and mixtures and also stated to be capable of effecting changes in viscosities and surface tensions and disintegrating molecular aggregates, comprises in the form shown a closed container 1 with liquid supply pipes 3, 4, discharge valve 8 and a pump with piston 10. The container is provided with baffles 16 and the valve 8 may either be in the position indicated or in some other position such as that indicated in dotted lines. Valves 5 are capable of being operated to open or close the inlet supplies. The container may be surrounded by a cooling or heating chamber 13. The suction stroke of the piston first relieves the pressure and then draws in liquid into the container and the return stroke at first raises the pressure and then discharges part of the liquid through the valve 8. The stroke of the piston may be arranged so that a sudden accelerationoccurs at the end of the stroke to produce a: hammer-like blow. The discharge through the valve 8 may be held up for a time.
