459,456. Apparatus for cleaning cylinders. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, and MONCRIEFF, R. W., and MILLER, P. H., c /o British Celanese, Ltd., Spondon, near Derby. July 8, 1935, No. 19438. [Class 34 (i)] A cleaning device for the surface of a rotating cylinder comprises an endless belt having a run that is close to the surface of the cylinder, and extends from one end to the other of the surface to be cleaned, a number of brushes carried along the length of the belt, and adapted to contact over said run, with the surface of the cylinder, and means for driving the belt so that during the operation of the device there is a relative motion between the brushes and the rotating cylinder that has a component parallel to the axis of the cylinder as well as a circumferential component. In the construction shown, an endless belt 4 carrying brushes 20 is mounted upon pulleys 5 near the ends of a drying cylinder 1. The brushes 20 are held against the surface 3 of the cylinder by one of two backing members 22. The belt is driven through the shaft 6 connected by bevel gearing with the main drive for the drying cylinder. The shaft 7 is adjustable to vary the tension of the belt. Sag in the belt is prevented by fenders 25 secured to the backing members 22. The shafts 6, 7 are carried by a channel member 9 which is adjustable to vary the pressure of the brushes against the cylinder 1.
