[Class 99 (i)] Fluidtightness between a pipe 6 and a bend, sleeve, &c. 1 is effected by an annular packing ring 8, preferably of moulded rubber or rubber composition, which is compressed within a shouldered recess 4 at the end of the bend by a coupling nut 10 and interposed follower 9. The uncompressed gasket, Fig. 4, is of greater length than the recess 4, and its inner surface 8a, Fig. 2, is tapered, preferably from a diameter at its outer end equal to or slightly greater than the exterior diameter of a maximum oversize pipe of any standard size to a diameter at its inner end equal to the outer diameter of the minimum undersize pipe of that standard size. Alternatively, the inner surface of the gasket is provided with a series of annular serrations, Fig. 5, constituted by tapered surfaces 8d and transverse shoulders 8<e>. The outer surface of the gasket is also preferably tapered at 8<b>, 8<c>. The follower 9 is in the form of a cup having a cylindrical portion, with a tapered inner surface 9<a>, which surrounds the outer end 8<b> of the gasket and fits the recess 4, and an inwardly extending flange 9<b> which engages the outer end of the gasket. The pipe may be positively secured within the bend by a slightly-dished metal ring 11, Fig. 10, bevelled at 11<b> and provided with slots 11<c>, which is interposed between the shoulder 5 of the recess 4 and the packing ring 8 in such manner that upon application of pressure to the packing ring its inner edge 11<a> is forced into gripping engagement with the pipe, Fig. 8. The bends &c. may be provided with stops 7 or a shoulder to form an abutment for the end of the pipe; the bend and pipe may also be in screwthreaded engagement.
