[Class 83 (i)] Moulds; casting processes.-In making compound castings for bearing bushes, piston rings, gear wheels, &c., antifriction alloy is cast upwardly on a supporting member 7 arranged in a sand mould, the cavity 3 of which tapers to a smaller cross-section at the top where it is connected to a riser 4. A curved extension 7 to receive the metal first poured and a channel 8 for the supply of inert gas, such as carbon monoxide are provided. In the mould shown the tapering cavity 3 is provided by using a conical core 2.
