Abstract
357,040. Moulds and cores. BROWN, A. M., 98, Fordwych Road, Brondesbury, London. Jan. 9, 1931, No. 824. [Class 83 (i).] Casting processes.-A hollow piston is cast with the head downwards, the sand core being inserted into a socket in a metal centring ring, and then lowered into position until the ring rests on the top of the mould. A mould comprises a main portion A, longitudinally divided, and aligned by dowel pins R in lugs T, and is formed at the ends O, P, to fit within recesses in end members L, B, or in extension rings M, Q, similarly formed. Vent holes H in the base member B are filled with strands of wire. The piston is preferably formed with six longitudinal webs, W, and gudgeon-pin holes are formed by removable pins E. The sand core S is carried in a recess F in the top ring L while it is lowered into the mould, the metal being then introduced at J and rising, when the mould is full, at K. The upper, centre, and lower portions of the mould are preferably maintained at 400 to 450‹ C., 300 to 350‹ C., and 50 to 100‹ C. respectively, and molten aluminium or aluminium alloy may be introduced at a temperature of 650 to 670‹ C.
