Abstract
Solutions containing titanium tetrafluoride as such or combined with other salts, for instance as ammonium titanofluoride, are purified from heavy metals, especially iron, by neutralizing if necessary, as with ammonia, and adding a soluble sulphide such as ammonium, sodium, or potassium sulphide, or hydrogen sulphide. Preferably the solution contains also ammonium fluoride, the ratio of NH4F to TiF4 being from 1 : 1 to 5 : 1. During precipitation of impurities, the solution is maintained neutral, if necessary, and reducing conditions are maintained during separation of the precipitate from the solution.
