Abstract

456,041. Printing-machines. SPEEDRY GRAVURE CORPORATION, Manhattan, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 14, 1936, No. 1228. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1935. [Class 100 (ii)] Inking-apparatus.-A rotary photogravure printing-cylinder 10 is inked with an ink having volatile ingredients by immersion in ink in a housing 12 which partially encloses the cylinder, and means are provided for recovering volatile ink ingredients escaping from the housing. The cylinder 10 is mounted on a shaft 11, and the end walls 13 are fitted with seals 17 to prevent escape of the volatile ingredients along the shaft, and with flanges 16 which overlap the ends of the cylinder. The doctor 18 preferably seals the adjacent side walls 14 of the housing, and in view of the fact that the blade reciprocates, and the flanges 16 cannot effectively seal the housing adjacent to the blade, suction manifolds 25 provided with openings 26 are provided to enable the vapours which are given off to be fed by a pump 29 to a condenser 30, and thence back to the supply tank 21, from which the ink is pumped through a pipe 22 and deposited on the cylinder. Circulation of the ink is provided for by a pump 24 which withdraws ink from the housing and leads it back to the tank 21. Another suction manifold 32 may be arranged between a cover 19 on the housing and the cylinder 10, and vapours which are drawn off through the orifice 33 of this manifold also pass to the condenser 30 and thence to the tank 21.
