[Class 100 (ii)] Inking-apparatus.-In a rotary intaglio print. ing-press having an ink housing enclosed with respect to the outer atmosphere and a printing- cylinder forming a portion of the closure of the housing, the ink supply reservoir and means for circulating ink between the reservoir and the housing are enclosed with respect to the atmosphere to prevent substantial evaporation of the ink. The reservoirs may form a portion of the housing or may be separate therefrom. Special means are provided for converting the stream of ink drawn from the reservoir into a ribbon-like jet adjacent to the printing cylinder. As shown in Fig. 3, applied to a press in which the cylinder 8 rotates in a sealed housing of which the ink-applying head 28 and the doctor mechanism 27 form parts as described in Specification 440,748, the ink reservoir is formed by the lower portion 26 of the housing, and the ink is pumped therefrom by a pump 112, Fig. 4, and diverted through a pipe 115, controlled by a valve 113, to the ink-applying head 28. The ink entering the head 28 is subdivided by passages 116-120 into a number of small downwardly directed streams equalizing the flow along the length of the cylinder. These streams enter a common chamber 121 provided with a slit-like aperture 122 adjacent the cylinder. The bottom portion 26 of the housing is formed with a number of sloping channels leading to outlet passages 106 and tho streams of ink issuing from these passages are united in several stages by means of headers 108, 107 into a single stream in a pipe 109 connected through valve 110 with the pump 112. In a modification the ink is supplied to the head 28 from an enclosed reservoir separate from the housing, the surplus ink falling into the bottom of the housing being pumped back into the reservoir. A second reservoir containing ink-solvent is connected to the pumps and suitable valves are provided whereby solvent may be added to the ink as desired, or the ink supply may be cut off and solvent only circulated through the system for cleaning purposes.
