Abstract

A razor blade or other fine edge tool is made from stainless chromium cutlery steel coated with nickel or a nickel-cobalt alloy, a blade or blank being hardened by heating in a reducing atmosphere after the coating is applied. Steel containing 15 per cent of chromium, 1 per cent of carbon, and 1 per cent. of manganese is electro-plated with nickel to a thickness of about 0,00025 inch, and after washing and drying is heated to 1050 DEG C. in illuminating gas, and is passed through water-cooled blocks and a tempering unit. an alternative coating contains 80 per cent of nickel and 20 per cent of cobalt.
