[Class 125 (ii)] [See also Group XXIX] The pressure of the counter-pressure gas supplied from an independent source 9 to a machine 8 for filling bottles with carbonated liquids is controlled in accordance with the pressure of the carbonated liquid by a known type of valve comprising an actuating piston or diaphragm 3 subject on one side to the pressure of the counter-pressure gas and on the other side to that of the aerated liquid. As shown in Fig. 2, a bottle-filling machine 8 such as is described in Specification 429,268 receives carbonated liquid from a machine 11 and counter-pressure gas in the form of compressed air from a source 9, the compressed air passing through a chamber 4 in the valve casing containing a vent valve 14 which opens to relieve the air pressure when such pressure exceeds that of the carbonated liquid in a chamber 5 on the other side of the diaphragm 3. In the practical embodiment of the valve shown in Fig. 1, a diaphragm 3 reinforced by discs 12 is clamped between two casing parts 1, 2 the part 1 being provided with inlet and outlet connections 6, 7 for compressed air and the part 2 having similar connections 10, 17 for the carbonated liquid which in this case passes through the chamber 5 The diaphragm may be loaded by a spring 19 having an adjustable abutment 18 so that the counter-pressure exceeds the pressure of the aerated liquid a predetermined amount. Ribs 16 prevent undue distortion of the diaphragm.
