453,331. Valves. ALVIS, Ltd., and CLARKE, T. SMITH-, Holyhead Road, Coventry. Feb. 26, 1936, No. 5742. [Class 7 (vi)] In an engine with cylinders parallel to the main axis, the cylinders are formed with elongated combustion chambers 13 having flat inner sides 15 from which lead ports 20 controlled by a rotary valve 18 formed with inlet passages 23 and exhaust passages 24, flanged packing-bushes 19 being fitted in the ports 20 so as to be pressed on to the periphery of the valve by the cylinder pressures acting on the ends of the bushes, and being provided with packing-rings 21. Packing-rings 22 are also provided on the valve. The valve is cooled by water or other liquid drawn through passages 31 from the cylinder jackets 17 by parts 30 on the valve shaped as fan blades. The passages 31 are formed through flexible bellows 32 secured to washers held apart by springs 33. Sparking-plugs 16 or fuel injectors are fitted to the combustion chambers.
