[Class 83 (ii)] [See also Group XXVIII] Tubular, non-ferrous, homogeneous, wroughtmetal adapters for connecting together pipe fittings of different diameters are made by subjecting one or both ends of a length of piping to pressure to alter the diameter. The length of piping may be of the same diameter as one of the fittings, in which case one end is enlarged or reduced to the diameter of the other fitting, preferably by swaging or drawing in the cold state. An adapter for connecting a pipe 12 to an elbow 13 is made from a length of copper tube of uniform diameter and preferably of wall thickness incapable of taking a screw thread, and comprises large and small ends 10, 11 adapted to telescope on to the pipe and elbow respectively. The part connecting the ends 10, 11 is pressed in, to provide an internal annular shoulder 14, by mounting the tube on a grooved mandrel and causing a rotating disc to bear on the exterior of the tube ; the shoulder forms stops for the members 12, 13. Either end of the adapter may fit inside or outside the pipe fitting. The enlargement and reduction have the effects respectively of decreasing and increasing the length of the tube.
