Abstract

451,305. Friction clutches. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.- (Robbins & Myers, Inc. ; 1345, Lagonda Avenue, Springfield, Ohio, U.S.A.) June 13, 1935, No. 17035. [Class 80 (ii)] In a friction clutch, engagement is effected by centrifugal means against the action of a weak spring and of magnetic means which becomes ineffective when the clutch engages. As shown, a conical clutch member 5, splined on a sleeve 3 secured to the rotor 1 of an electric motor, is urged away from a conical member 9 secured to a shaft 2 by a weak spring 15 and is adapted to be moved into engagement by the centrifugal action of segmental weights 11 arranged between outwardly-converging walls of the member 5 and of a ring 1<1> secured to the rotor. A magnetizable ring 16 secured to the member 5 projects into the effective field of the rotor leakage flux when the member 5 is in dis engaged position. A magnetic pull, which decreases as the speed increases, is thus exerted on the member 5. When the clutch engages, however, the ring 16 is moved out of the effective path of the leakage flux, and the magnetic pull becomes negligible.
