[Class 40 (v)] The disadvantage of the voltage drop across the smoothing choke of a mains supply system for thermionic valves, is overcome by taking the anode supply for the output valve R or other stages from a point A between the choke L1 and the rectifier 4 or mains. The increase in hum is compensated by feeding into the grid circuit of valve R a ripple component of such phase and magnitude as to oppose the hum component in the anode circuit, this component being derived from an auxiliary winding L2 coupled to the choke L1. The latter may be constituted by the field winding of a loud speaker,
