[Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] The gain of an amplifier is controlled by varying the magnetization of an iron-cored coupling impedance. In one embodiment, for automatic control, a potential divider feeding an amplifier 1 comprises a fixed impedance 7 and a variable impedance 8 which comprises two coils W1, W2 on an iron core which also carries auxiliary coils G1, G2. The coil G1 carries a direct current derived from the amplifier output through transformer 9, rectifier 10 and filter 11, 12, 13, while the coil G2 carries a manually variable current from a D.C. source 14. Volume expansion or contraction may be produced by causing the coil G1 to oppose or assist the coil G2, and the invention is applicable to carrier or audio frequency amplifiers. The impedance of the coil 7 may also be regulated and, if desired, the ranges of regulation of the coils 7, 8 may be different. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the potential divider is in the output and the rectifier in the input circuit.
