Abstract
449,905. Helmets. THIERRY, E. H., Heston Aerodrome, Hounslow, Middlesex. Dec. 4, 1934, No. 34849. [Class 63] A helmet for flying, motoring, &c. is provided with one or more inserted highly elastic hollow rubber bodies adapted to lie around the margin of the helmet, or around the ears, or around both the ears and the marginal edge of the helmet, to exclude draught and noise, the rubber bodies being made of pure rubber of such thinness to permit them to mould themselves readily to the shape of the head. The helmet 2, Fig. 1, is provided around the marginal edge 1 with a hollow sealing tube 3 enclosed by a fabric or other suitable casing 4, and adapted to be inflated in situ by means of a tube 6 provided with a valve 8. The sealing tube may be endless, or its ends may abut, or a plurality of tubes arranged end to end around the edge of the helmet may be used. In the form shown in Fig. 2, ear sealing is effected by means of a tubular ring pad 10 adapted to lie over or around each ear, the ear pads being inflated either separately or together. The helmet is apertured at 11 opposite the ring openings of the pads, and provided externally with a pocket to receive the earpiece of a telephone. In a modification, a rubber-walled reservoir located in the crown of the helmet may be placed in communication with the sealing means so that the latter can be distended by fluid displaced from the reservoir when the helmet is pulled over the head.
