Abstract

A full face motorcycle helmet with integral earmuff type of hearing protection is described. The earmuffs are adjustable for "fit" by virtue of inflatable reservoirs between their outer surface and the inner surface of the helmet skull. Inflation/deflation of these reservoirs is controlled by a pump/release valve mechanism sited on the helmet chinpiece. <IMAGE>

Description

SOUND PROOF HELMET DESCRIPTION This invention relates to a full face motorcyle helmet that includes integral hearing protection, adjustable for fit and function.
Motorcyclists have been shown to be exposed to excessive wind noise levels when riding at speeds greater than 45mph and to suffer hearing damage as a consequence.
Hearing protection is required to protect the rider from the occurrence of noise induced hearing loss. We are unaware of any currently produced helmet that provides sufficient protection to avoid this problem. We have therefore designed a helmet which incorporates earcup hearing protectors (earmuffs) which are adjustable by means of inflatable reservoirs sited between the earmuffs and the helmet shell as shown in Figure 2.
The helmet is basically a standard full face helmet with all foams in the per-aural region removed to accommodate earmuffs.
The earmuff is separated from the outer helmet shell by a suitably sized -inflatable reservoir.
The earmuff is secured to the reservoir and the reservoir is in turn secured to the helmet shell.
The two reservoirs are linked by a hollow tube. The left hand reservoir is connected by a hollow tube to a "pump/release valve" mechanism sited on the left side of the chinpiece as shown in Figure 1. The pump can then be used to inflate the reservoirs with a fluid medium and ensure a secure fit, and thus adequate hearing protection from the earmuffs.
The purpose of this design is the provision of adequate hearing protection for the wearer.

Claims (4)

1. A full face motorcycle safety helmet meeting current UK safety specifications, which incorporates "earmuff" type hearing protection.
2. A "helmet" as claimed in 1 in which there are inflatable reservoirs between the internal surface of the helmet shell and the outer surface of the earmuff.
3. A helmet as claimed in 1 + 2 in which the inflatable reservoirs are connected to an integral "pump/release valve" mechanism situated on the left side of the chinpiece of the helmet.
4. A helmet as claimed in 1,2 and 3 in which the medial/lateral position, and hence the "fit", of the earmuff can be controlled by means of the degree of inflation/deflation of the reservoirs using the pump mechanism.
