448,926. Securing ball ties. MORTIMER, G, Frome, Exford Avenue, Westcliff-on- Sea. Sept. 17, 1934, No.26649. [Class 83 (iv)] [See also Groups I and XV] Punching; shearing -In a band-sealing machine punches form tongues 47, 61 in the overlapping ends of the band and sliding members turn over the tonques to seal the joint. The free end of the band is passed under a die plate 29 then between a clamp 58, 59 to knurled tensioning rollers 70, 71. Tensioning. The handle 72 is operated to turn the roller 71 by ratchet mechanism. The lower roller 70 is carried in an arm 73 with adjustable pin 75 bearing against the handle boss. The grip between the rollers is adjusted by the pin 75 to allow the rollers to slip if the tension is excessive A notch 78 in the boss allows the rollers to be separated for feeding in the band. Clamp. The handle 27 is pulled back to clamp the band by lowering a clamp 36. Punching tongues 47. The handle 24 is pulled forward to depress punches 30 to form the tongues, and is then moved backwards to slide a carriage 36 carrying pivoted bending fingers 40 moved outwards by a fixed pin to bend over the tongues. Punching tongues 61 and severing the band. The handle 27 is thrown back to depress a rod 61 operating a gripper 56. The handle is then moved forwards after forming the tongues 47 and one end of the band is freed. A cutting edge 52 then severs the band and a punch 53 forms the tongue 61.
