Abstract
A guillotine (2), comprising a guillotine blade (4), an upper mounting member (6) for mounting the guillotine blade (4) and a base member (8) on which sheet material to be cut is placed, has attachment means (10), which may themselves be removable, for receiving a punch. A front or back gauge may be provided. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A guillotine
This invention relates to a guillotine.
Guillotines for use in industry are well known. The known guillotines have a blade which is arranged to travel from an up position to a cutting down position. Whilst the known guillotines are adequate for cutting sheet material, they cannot be used for other purposes.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a guillotine which can be used for cutting sheet material and which can also be used for effecting a punching operation.
Accordingly, this invention provides a guillotine comprising a guillotine blade, an upper mounting member for mounting the guillotine blade, a base member on which sheet material to be cut is placed, and attachment means for receiving a punch.
Usually, the base member will be provided with a recess under the attachment means for receiving a die. The punches and dies may be varied in size as desired.
Also usually the guillotine will be of a size for fitting on a bench but larger or smaller guillotines may be produced.
Preferably, the attachment means is a removable attachment means but it may be a fixed attachment means if desired. The removable attachment means is preferably a bolt-on attachment means.
The guillotine may be provided with gauge measuring means.
The gauge measuring means may be a front and/or back stop gauge measuring means.
The gauge measuring means may comprise a calibrated front adjuster dial, a saw-tooth belt, and a pair of threaded adjustment rods.
The guillotine may also be provided with light means for illuminating a spot at which the punch will effect a punching operation.
The light means may be provided on the attachment means, and the light means may be arranged to focus automatically on a work piece when the upper mounting member is in its fully raised position. The light means may be a light pen.
The upper mounting member may be arranged to operate on a linkage arrangement comprising one cross bar and a pair of downwardly extending linking arms, the linking arms being such that they connect to the upper mounting member and act with a cam-like action.
The guillotine can advantageously be used for cutting and punching holes in sheet material such for example as aluminium, printed circuit board material, glass fibre material, and sheet steel.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view of the guillotine from the front and one side;
Figure 2 is a view of the guillotine from the front; and
Figure 3 is a view of the guillotine from one side.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a desk-mounted guillotine 2 comprising a guillotine blade 4 and an upper mounting member 6 for mounting the guillotine blade 4. The guillotine 2 also comprises a base member 8 on which sheet material (not shown) to be cut is placed.
The guillotine 2 has attachment means 10 bolted onto the upper mounting member 6 by two rows of four bolts (not shown) which extend from the rear of the guillotine 2. The attachment means 10 is able to receive different sized punches in a downwardly depending part 12. The part 12 cooperates with a recessed part 14 which is in the base member 8 and which is for receiving different sized dies. The guillotine 2 is designed to take a range of punches and dies.
The upper mounting member 6 operates via a linkage arrangement comprising a cross bar 16 and a pair of downwardly extending linking arms 18, 20. The linking arms 18, 20 connect to the upper mounting member 6 and they act with a cam-like action.
The guillotine 4 has a back stop 22 which is L-shaped in cross section and which is mounted at each end on a pair of screw threaded rods 24, 26. The rods 24, 26 are connected by a saw tooth belt 28. The rod 24 and therefore the rod 26 and the back stop 22 are adjusted by a calibrated dial 30 provided at the front right hand side of the guillotine 2. The precision movement of the back stop 22 gives the facility for precision cutting, shearing or punching.
The guillotine 2 can be used to cut aluminium sheet material, printed circuit board material and glass fibre sheet material ail up to 2mm in thickness and sheet steel up to 1.2mm in thickness. Holes can be punched as desired in the sheet material using the attachment means 10. The guillotine 2 is simple to use and is especially useful for short run work.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the attachment means 10 may be provided with light means such as a light pen or other device (not shown) for automatically focusing on a work piece on the base member 8 when the upper mounting member 6 is fully raised to indicate exactly where the punch will fall.
Thus simple holes or holes in rows or other patterns can very accurately be cut.
