[Class 45.] In a machine for securing a bale tie 8, 9, tensioning is performed by a device 35, the end of the tie is sheared by a blade 31, and the overlap is corrugated by recessed toothed rollers 1, 2 mounted on a carriage 5 and rotated by a lever 18, the rollers rolling along the overlap to bend it longitudinally and to corrugate it transversely. As the rollers travel over the tie the carriage is moved against the urge of a returning spring 21. To release the tie the carriage is swung about a guide rod 14 by the lever 18. The band end 9 is positioned between a lug 44 and the tensioning roller 43, the band is passed about the bale and the end 8 is positioned on the end 9. An eccentric bush turned by a lever 46 clamps the ends and operation of a lever 38 through a ratchet tensions the band end 8 by rotation of the roller 43. The end 8 is then sheared by a pivoted blade 31 actuated by a pin 50 on the gear 5. To corrugate the overlap the rollers 1, 2 are swung about the rod 14 to engage the strap and operation of lever 18 rotates the rollers to bend the tie axially and to corrugate the folded strap. An arm 52 on the carriage 5 engages the shear device to swing it. about a pivot 23 to enable the rollers to travel beyond the point of shear. In a modification the rollers are positively driven by a gear engaging a fixed rack.
