[Class] 146 (ii)] In machines for sealing the overlapping ends of metal bands as described in Specification 448,926, in which tongues are punched out and bent over on the underside of the band and a cutter for the free end of the band acts to punch out further tongues, means are provided also to turn over these tongues. The band is gripped between serrated surfaces 82, 83, Fig. 1, brought into engagement by pressing backwards the handle 27 actuating the cutter, and the band is tensioned by a known form of apparatus 90. A handle 24 is drawn forwards to depress a plate 29 carrying punches 30, Figs. 3 and 5, to punch tongues from the overlapped ends of the band. The handle 24 is then moved backwards beyond normal position to move forward a slide 36 to which is pivoted a plate 40 having at the front end teeth 41 spaced apart a distance equal to that between the punches. A pin 42 on the machine engages a cam surface 43 on the plate and causes the plate to rock to bend the tongues over in the same direction. On the return of the handle 24 to normal position, surfaces 44, 45 restore the plate 40. Punches 46 on the plate 29 form longitudinal tongues in the ends of the band. The handle 27 is then pulled forwards, and a cutter 63, co-operating with the resilientlymounted part 82 of the gripper, severs the free end of the band, and a punch 64, Figs. 5 and 7, on the cutter punches triangular tongues from the band. On the movement of the handle 27 to rear position, a slide 68 is moved forward so that the front end of a plate 70, pivoted to the slide, engages the tongues and, due to a pin-and-slot connection 72, 73 swings the plate to cause the tongues to be bent over in the opposite direction from that of the tongues formed by the punches 30.
