[Class 51 (ii)] In plant comprising a rotary kiln 1 for burning cement, modulizing ores, &c., and a cooler consisting of a gas-permeable support 5, through which and the layer of material thereon, cooling gas is passed, the support 5 is circular in form and is rotated by means of a vertical shaft 6 so that elements 9, which project downwardly into the material at a point diametrically opposite to the receiving point 3, effect the gradual movement of the charge over the support to the annular discharge opening 10. Cooling air is supplied by a fan 14 to the space 12 below the support and escape of this air is prevented by a liquid seal 8 between the rotary support and a fixed enclosing casing. The usual end hood 2 of the kiln 1 is provided with an opening 4 through which may be removed any lumps of material whose delivery to the cooler is undesirable. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which a second fixed support 15 is provided below the rotary support 5, the latter carrying on its underside rabble elements 16 which effect movement of the material received from the upper support 5 over the lower support 15 to the discharge outlet 17. The cooling air, supplied to the space 18, is prevented from passing directly through the annular space 10 by the damming up of the material in this space, and a scraper element 23 is provided to facilitate the passage of material from the space 10 to the lower support 15. In this form, the shaft 6 is driven through chain and pinion gearing from a pinion 22 secured to the shell of the kiln 1.
