209,020. Metals Production, Ltd., (Assignees of Perkins, W. G.). Dec. 26, 1922, [Convention date]. Cooling ores. - Apparatus more particularly adapted for use in connection with the processes described in Specifications 185,242, 190,246, and 203,383, [all in Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], comprises, a rotable drum with means thereon by which water can be continuously raised from a reservoir or tank and distributed in a freely flowing stream over the zone to be cooled. As shown, the water-raising means consists of a series of buckets or scoops 25 secured between perforated casings 26, 27, the former of which is spaced from the shell of the drum, the scoops being arranged to dip into tank 28 having a pivotally-adjustable outflow pipe 35 for regulating the watar level. A pointer 37 moving over a scale on the tank indicates the position of the pipe 35. When the drum is inclined as shown in Fig. 1, a number of rings of scoops operating in separate tanks or divisions of a large tank are distributed over the length of the drum, land more particularly adjacent the end joints and the bearing-rings. Each end joint comprises a seating-plate 6 bolted to the fixed end casing 5, a cover plate 7, a collar 8 loosely mounted on the drum and a gland 9a. A packing ring 6a is inserted between the collar 8 and the cover plate. As an additional protection for the joint at the inlet end of the apparatus the charge-supporting portion 10 of the drum may be spaced from the outer shell by making it of the truncated conical form shown. The lining 13 of the drum is omitted at points where it is desired to cool the material under treatment. Specification 4122/74, [Class 51, Furnaces and kilns], also is referred to.
