Abstract

447,126. Controlling change-speed gearing. CLERK, R. C., Sweet Briar, Runnymede Tow Path, Egham, Surrey. Nov. 10, 1934, No. 32443. [Class 80 (ii)] Stepwise change-speed gearing, on a vehicle such as a motor-cycle, is controlled by a rotary plate such as 81, Fig. 3, operated by an intermediate member such as a slide-block 83, connected to the clutch-control with lostmotion, through a cable 21, operation of which cable rotates the plate 81 in a direction determined by the lateral position of the block 83 with respect to the axis of the plate 81. The block slides in a slot 82 and is biassed by a spring 84 to the side for upward changes, a preselector cable 24 serving to move the block to the other side of the slot for downward changes. In this construction the plate 81 returns to the central position after each change. The cable 24 may be operated either jointly or separately by opening the enginethrottle, retarding the ignition, applying the service brakes, or by a separate manual control. Three such controls are shown in Fig. 5, being connected to control cables 91, 92, 93, adjustably secured to guided slides 87, 88, 89, which have lateral projections at their lower ends for engaging a central guided slide 90, resiliently secured to the preselector cable 24. In the modified control shown in Fig. 1, the preselector cable 24 swings a pawl-carrying lever 68 between stops 70, 71 on a plate 64 rotatable about the axis of a speed-selecting ratchet disc 60, which is moved in steps in either direction. The clutch-cable 21 is connected to the lower free end of the lever 68, and its pull is transmitted through either stop 70 or 71 to the plate 64 and thence, through the pawl 67 to the selector-disc 60. The lever 68 may be replaced by a pin-andslot arrangement similar to that shown in Fig. 3, the pawl 67 being then carried by the plate 64. The pin-and-slot arrangement of Fig. 3 may be replaced by a lever pivoted to the plate 81 and swinging between stops on the plate.
