Abstract

422,874. Change-speed gear. ROESCH, G., and CLEMENT TALBOT, Ltd., Barlby Road, Ladbroke Grove, London. Dec. 8, 1933, No. 34632. [Class 80 (ii)] A change-speed gear comprises an actuating member, a number of gear engaging and disengaging means with a corresponding number of releasable mechanical connections to the actuating member, and an adjustable selector mechanism which may be set to release a connection to disengage a gear during the first part of the movement of the actuating member and during the remainder of such movement to close another connection and also to alter the adjustment of the selector mechanism. A succession of movements of the actuating pedal brings in the various gear trains in order, and indicates the next pre-selection by moving the hand selector-control; operation of the hand-control however does not move the actuating-pedal. The Figure shows a construction for use in conjunction with the Wilson gear-box described in Specification 370,442. A gear may be pre-selected by a hand lever 17 which through a worm-sector and wheel 15, 14 rotates a shaft 11 carrying a number of cams, to a position wherein one cam will permit the spring-actuation of a corresponding swing- ing link which link on depression of the bus-bar 10 by a pedal and its subsequent release, is engaged by the rising bus-bar and applies the brake-band of the selected epicyclic gear, the swinging link of the previous gear being simultaneously disengaged. A rocking-lever 21 is either connected to the pedal-operated busbar 10, or itself actuates the bus-bar being actuated by a pedal 13 through a spring connection 9. At its forward end the lever 21 carries a pawl 30 which, in the latter part of the rising movement of the bus-bar, engages a ratchet wheel 38 on the cam-shaft, rotating it to prepare the next gear for engagement at the next actuation of the pedal. The pawl is mounted on a rod 29 which rod is pivoted on the rocking-lever 21 and is adjustable by a nut 35 on a swivel bearing 32.
