446,959. Jointing tubes to plates. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., Babcock House, Farringdon Street, London.-(Assignees of Jacobus, D. S. ; 95, Harrison Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Nov. 20, 1935, No. 32227. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1934. [Class 99 (i)] A tube 28 is jointed to a plate 16 by welding its end circumferentially at 42 to a spaced ferrule 40 which is expanded into a hole in the said plate. Preferably the end of the tube is reduced in diameter to receive the ferrule and also an intermediate sleeve 36 of easily-fusible metal or paper &c., the assembly then being expanded into the tube plate and the tube and ferrule finally welded together. The tube end may be provided with circumferential ribs 32, 34, and the plate hole with grooves 43, 44 ; the ferrule may also be welded to the plate, and the tube and ferrule flared at 46 during the expanding operation.
