445,931. Breakdown vehicles. LAKE, A. E., 113, Dunmow Road, Bishop's Stortford. Oct. 9, 1934, No. 28836. [Class 78 (iii)] A device for salvaging motor vehicles &c. comprises a beam one end of which is operatively connected to a truck or bogie, which may be a service vehicle, and the other end extends beyond the wheels of the truck or bogie and is adapted to be connected to the axle, or other appropriate part of the vehicle being salvaged and raised. Between the outer end of the beam and the truck or bogie there is provided a vertical pivot to allow the salvaged vehicle to be pulled round corners. Fig. 1 shows a form in which the beam A<1> is connected to the truck D by a vertical pivot C, a crane H being mounted on the truck D to lift the beam by a cross-bar A<7> located between its ends, a horizontal pivot B being provided to allow of this motion. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the beam A<1> is connected to the truck by a ball-and-socket joint A5, A<6>, a vertical pivot A<4> being provided at the outer end of the beam. The lifting is effected by traversing along the beam the bearings axle of road wheels D<1> by a manually-operated screw E. In a further modification, shown in Fig. 5, the beam A<1> is pivoted at C' to an arm C<1> connected at one end to the truck by a ball-and-socket joint A<5>, C<3>, and supported at its outer end by road-wheels D<1>. The outer end of the lifting beam A<1> is raised by a hand-controlled screw operating between the beam and the axle of the wheels D<1>.
