Abstract
445,924. Universal clocks. EWART, J., 39, Onslow Street, St. Clair, and BENNETT, T., 49, Fitzroy Street, Caversham, both in Dunedin, New Zealand. Oct. 29, 1935, No. 29830. [Class 139] Apparatus for ascertaining the time in various countries corresponding to Greenwich Mean Time comprises a fixed ring dial 6 divided into twelve hours (each subdivided into five minutes), an inner dial 2 rotated by the clockwork mechanism and having arrows 10 around its periphery which represent the various countries and read against the fixed dial, and a pair of cylinders 11 and 12 bearing the names of the various countries and showing through slots 16, 17 in the case 1. Dial 2 is rotated once in twelve hours. Against each name on cylinder 11 or 12 is a letter and two numerals, e.g. " A. 9. 13. Japan "means that Japan's time is nine hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time and arrow No. 13 on dial 2 represents Japan. That is, if hand 4 (Great Britain) reads 1 hour 5 minutes G.M.T. then arrow 13 reads 10 hours 5 minutes. The letter " B " on cylinder 11 or 12 signifies time behind G.M.T. The cylinders are rotated by knob 15 to expose the desired names at opening 16 or 17. A basic time other than G.M.T. may be used as the standard. The cylinders 11 and 12 may bear twenty-seven names in all, corresponding to the same number of arrows, or each arrow may have more than one appropriate country correlated to it.
