Abstract

A readily dispersible carbon black is obtained by precipitating an alkaline earth napthenate from an aqueous solution of a soluble napthenate in the presence of the carbon black, preferably in an amount between 1 and 10 per cent of the carbon calculated on the naphthenic acid used. The black may be suspended in an aqueous solution of a alkali metal or ammonium naphthenate and precipitated by the addition of an alkaline earth metal salt, e.g. barium chloride, preferably at a raised temperature; or the black may be suspended in the alkaline earth metal salt solution, the soluble naphenate being added. The product is readily dispersed in non-aqueous vehicles, e.g. mineral solvents, resins or nitrocellulose solvents, and their apparent density is increased. They are particularly suitable for printing inks, lithographic varnishes, or lacquers made from natural resins or containing cellulose derivatives or synthetic resins, particularly of the polybasic acid-polyhydric alcohol type, or for compounding rubber and other plastic compositions.
