Abstract
312,745. Maclaurin, R., and Maclaurin, I. M. March 30, 1928. Ink.-Low temperature or semi-low temperature tars are used as a basis for printing-ink. The tars used preferably contain only traces of naphthalene, a resinous or asphaltic product which is separated by the addition of petroleum or a paraffinoid oil, and a further resinous product which separates on the adddition of a 3 per cent solution of sulphuric acid or equivalent dilute acid. 'The' resinous products can be added to other portions of tar to render them suitable for use as ink. Other agents to retard drying, such as linseed oil, may be added. Tars containing 30-50 per cent resinous products are most suitable. Thinning-agents, such as turpentine, benzole, solvent naphtha, or tar from which the resinous products have been precipitated, can be used when necessary. The addition of ferrous hydrate tends to blacken the tar and renders the use of a smaller amount of pigment possible, In an example, a low temperature tar prepared from bituminous coals by a known process is heated with linseed oil and solid caustic soda, and carbon black or other black pigment added. According to the Provisional Specification, the distillates may be used as' thinning-agents, and ferrous sulphate may be added in place of ferrous hydrate.
