Coating-compositions. - Antifouling and preservative compositions comprise oils or paint vehicles and a material made by heating a fluoride in a fatty oil, or in a fatty acid of high molecular weight, or in a salt of such acid, alkali fluoride or ammonium fluoride may be heated with oleic acid with or without the addition of caustic soda. By the addition of gum and a solvent such as turpentine, petroleum spirit or benzol a paint vehicle is formed. A wood preservative is formed by mixing the fluoride solution, with or without zinc oxide, with a suitable oil, with or without the addition of resinous acids, fuel oil or the residuum of petroleum distillation. The materials are particularly suitable for submarine structures. In an example 20 parts of oleic acid are heated at 180‹-250‹ F. with 6 parts of sodium fluoride, 6 parts of ammonium fluoride and 6 parts of caustic soda and the product used as indicated above. The Provisional Specification describes also paints and oils mixed with a fluoride which is slowly attacked by water or sea-water, with or without sulphur or a sulphide. The fluorides of lead, mercury, zinc and copper are specified. A composition for treating wood comprises a fluoride or fluorides. sulphur or a sulphide, with vegetable, mineral or coal-tar oil or oleic acid or with any mixture thereof.
